Understanding the Ogham Tradition
The Ogham (pronounced "OH-am") is an ancient Celtic alphabet that emerged in Ireland and the British Isles around the 4th century CE. Unlike other alphabets, each character represents both a sound and a sacred tree, creating a living connection between language and nature.
The twenty primary letters, known as "feda," are divided into four groups called "aicmi" (plural of aicme). Each group corresponds to a different aspect of life: Beithe (beginnings), hUatha (growth), Muine (maturity), and Ailme (transformation).
Five additional characters, the "forfeda," were added later to represent more complex sounds and concepts, completing this sacred system of tree wisdom.
